Qi Baishi: Inspiration in Ink
On May 9, 2025, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA), one of America's leading cultural institutions, unveiled "Qi Baishi: Inspiration in Ink", a landmark exhibition dedicated to one of modern China's most iconic artists. Co-organized with the China International Exhibition Agency (CIEA) and the Beijing Fine Art Academy, the exhibition marks the first comprehensive presentation of Qi Baishi's work and celebrates the timeless and universal allure of Chinese ink painting.
For CIEA, the exhibition was more than just a display of artistic mastery. It represents a significant milestone in CIEA's ongoing commitment to deepening international cultural exchange and promoting China's outstanding traditional culture globally. CIEA oversaw the flawless planning, coordination, and execution of the exhibition, leveraging its extensive international networks and expertise in presenting Chinese culture abroad.
CIEA and the MFA have a rich history of collaboration that began with the groundbreaking 1981 exhibition "American Paintings from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston". That partnership was reaffirmed and celebrated over four decades later at the opening ceremony with an exchange of commemorative catalogues, a symbolic gesture honoring both institutions' past achievements while heralding a new chapter for continued cooperation. The success of the exhibition reinforced CIEA's role as a bridge for facilitating cross-cultural exchanges with China and international parties, and elevating the global influence of Chinese culture.
Qi Baishi Art Digital Exhibition
To commemorate the 160th anniversary of Qi Baishi's birth, CIEA also collaborated with the Beijing Fine Art Academy and Shandong Jindong Digital Creative Co Ltd to launch the "Qi Baishi Art Digital Exhibition", an immersive digital activation project that has toured across China, garnering more than 2.6 million visitors in multiple cities. Several venues have reported record breaking attendance, with young visitors comprising more than half the visitors, demonstrating its strong appeal to new generations.
The exhibition unfolds across different chapters that guides visitors through Qi's artistic journey and unique perspective. It opens by inviting them to see the world "through Qi Baishi's eyes" masterfully blending elements of virtual and physical reality that inspired his work. The exhibition recreates key phases of his artistic journey, transporting audiences from the lotus ponds, bamboo groves, and shimmering fish of his homeland in the enduring dreamscape of Huxiang, to the transformative travel encounters that broadened his artistic vision and revolutionized his style.
The exhibition delves further into his philosophy of finding the macrocosm within the microcosm—"a world in a single flower"—where his depictions of a blossom, a leaf, a fish, or an insect reveal his reflections on life, emotion, and the universe. It concludes with his later years in Beijing, where he embraced the "path of solitude", devoting himself to his studio and producing an array of celebrated masterpieces.
