Inspired by the phenomenal animated film of the same name, the musical I Am What I Am brings to the stage an inspiring story of ordinary youths chasing extraordinary dreams. It celebrates the thousand-year tradition of lion dance culture and immerses the audience in the vibrant tapestry of Lingnan's customs and landscapes.

Produced by China Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG), it weaves together the collective cultural memory of the Greater Bay Area, embodying the relentless and tenacious spirit of lion dance practitioners to interpret the region's rich humanistic heritage.

The Mandarin version of the musical officially unveiled its cast on October 10, 2023, and made its spectacular debut from January 11 to 14, 2024, passionately showcasing the Cantonese spirit of self-improvement and determined striving.

Shortly after, the Cantonese version of I Am What I Am was invited to the prestigious 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival—a major international cultural event. It performed four consecutive shows at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre's Grand Theatre from March 8 to 10, 2024.

On October 2, 2025, the musical I Am What I Am was invited to Hong Kong again, presenting a compilation of highlights entitled I Am What I Am : The Future at the Hong Kong Coliseum, as part of the grand evening gala celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
