IMAGE CHINA — Dragon Boat Racing makes splash at Eisenhower Theater

Dragon Boat Racing, an award-winning Chinese dance-drama by the Guangdong Song & Dance Ensemble, was staged on February 2 in the Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Set in the 1930s, Dragon Boat Racing tells the story of how one of the finest and most famous Cantonese compositions became a musical theme that inspired an entire nation.

The 2014 Chinese premiere of Dragon Boat Racing achieved vast popularity. In 2016, the production won the Wenhua Award, a prestigious national presentation made every three years by the Ministry of Culture of the Chinese government to recognize the highest level of stage-performance arts.

 

Dragon Boat Racing had its US premiere in the David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in January 2016. In its review, The New York Times refereed to the show as "A Story Sea of Love and Song."

Dragon Boat Racing blends traditional Cantonese music and history with state-of-the-art theatrical skill. Written by Tang Dong with music by Du Ming, Dragon Boat Racing is directed and choreographed by Zhou Liya and Han Zhen.

 

The production is a part of the China Arts and Entertainment Group (CAEG) 's Image China cultural exchange initiative, a program that introduces traditional and contemporary Chinese performing arts to audiences around the world. Since its inception in 2009, Image China has presented works at venues across the globe, including the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center, and performance venues in Australia and Europe.
